Every marketer knows how important a strong hook is.

 

And most have spent hours trying to draft the perfect hook for an opt-in page or ad.

 

So yes the promise is clear and the problem being solved is a #1 pain point.

 

But what I love most about both the pre-head and headline is that it is timebound.

 

Now in the pre-header, it is time-bound for the subject. 

 

Your reader will be converted into a raving fan in one minute or less.

 

I read the headline as I will be able to create a sales hook in 60 seconds.

 

In both cases, we are being made feel as if this is a massive shortcut. 

 

It’s quick and easy and it removes a major pain point from our life.

 

And the real knockout punch is the quote from legendary copywriter John Charlton.

 

“Kevin is the GREATEST copywriter I know” 

 

This goes to show us that you don’t need a massive volume of social proof. 

 

You just need the right social proof.

It packs a punch but is simple and feels light.

Especially when your story reflects the struggles and ambitions of your audience.

 

I love how this is almost a mini-hero’s journey story.

  • I discovered a joke formula that works as a sales hook
  • I thought it to others
  • Now, I earn more in a month than I did in a year
  • And I would like to show you to do the same

 

We can all follow this storytelling approach in our ads.

For every lead magnet and offer, our goal should be to distill it down into 1 sentence.

 

A sentence that positions our audience describes the problem that it solves and the transformation it provides.

This is a low-key funnel. 

 

There is no big push or pressure on the upsell. 

 

In fact, after opt-in for the lead magnet you are redirected to a thank you page.

 

On the thank you page, there is a button to find out more about the membership.

 

If I had one point for testing on this funnel, it would be to send people directly to the offer.

 

For me, this doesn’t do any harm, but it maximizes your conversion surface area.

 

Such a huge part of marketing is understanding the fears and frustrations of your audience.

 

Kevin does a great job of this below the call to action button.

 

He lists the 3 major frustrations and then gives the reader the alternative.

 

And instead, you want to walk the proven path to becoming a CONFIDENT, RESPECTED, PRO COPYWRITER, whose calendar stays booked solid with qualified, collaborative clients who respect both the craft and the copywriter… then, please, read on…

 

A proven path – booked solid – qualified clients – respect.

The countdown is on to one of the big launches in the Online Course world. Amy Porterfield is limbering up for her Digial Course Academy Launch. What a great time to be a launch voyeur!

Closer to the launch, Amy will likely use a traditional pre-launch opt-in. But, for now, her list-building efforts are focused on her “Discover Your Ambition Archetype” quiz.

Archetype or Type is one of the 3 (and possibly most common) quiz types.

  • Type

Amy has followed the Ask Method to the tee with this quiz and uses Bucket.io as her quiz builder.

Some key takeaways:

  • Immediately your eyes are drawn to “Free Quiz” across the top. As quizzes are still a relative novelty for front-end users, the combination of Free and Quiz is strong.
  • One of the strongest trigger lines on the page is “Discover Your Ambition Archetype” – Discover is one of my favorite opt-in page words. It builds curiosity and intrigue. Most entrepreneurs are “ambition” and competitive-focused, which will pique their interest. We love finding out how we fit into the world, which is why Archetypes are so powerful. 
  • Ready to get clear on exactly how you can make more cash, impact, and space to do what you love, your way? Amy touches directly on the 2 of the 3 freedoms here with Financial and Time. Impact is also closely related to the 3rd freedom, which is lifestyle. 
  • An interesting question to ask is do we really want impact for what it does for others or do we want “impact” for how it makes us feel about our own significance. (Could be a good one to journal on!)

Facebook Ad Optimization: Reviewing Effective Quiz Ads

If you launch a Quiz you will need traffic at scale. 

Before I dive into one of Amy’s ads, jump over to the Facebook Ad Library and look at the scale of the campaign that Amy has launched.

Amy has 17 Ad variations running for her Quiz. Some of these ads appear 35 times across different campaigns and ad sets. 

There is a mix of medium and long-form ad copy centered around 2-3 key themes. 

These are matched with static and video creatives. 

If you study the copy and creative, you realize you don’t need lots of ideas. 

You just need 2-3 strong ideas and then iterate to produce many ad variations.

This is especially important if you are running a time condensed campaign for something like a launch where you have a large budget being spent over a relatively short period of time.

Some key takeaways:

  • Amy grabs attention with “New Quiz!” Emojis are a great way to catch people’s eyes in ads. 
  • Straight away Amy calls out her primary avatar, which is a corporate professional looking to start an online business. “allergic to a “typical” career path”. 
  • After grabbing their attention Amy connects with their fears and the internal nagging voice that exists within the head of her avatar. “Moving up in WHOSE world”
  • Then she moves into connecting with their dreams – “creating a business and life that aligns with your values”
  • She then links the outcome people want to the quiz.
  • Take a few minutes to answer this 7-question quiz and get to know which of the 4 Ambition Archetypes you are. Few minutes – 7-questions – 4 Ambition Archetypes. Gets specific, makes it feel quick, and makes it feel easy. Remember the value formula – Accentuate the primary promise, guarantee the outcome, reduce the time to attainment and reduce the effort required.
  • Study the fascination bullet points. In fact take 5 minutes now, grab a note pad and write these out. Often we feel compelled to tell people what they need to do or what they will get. Notice the way Amy creates real curiosity and teases the outcome without giving any real detail.

Launch Waitlist – Avatar Call out

I love following a launch from start to finish. So much happens before that first bit of pre-launch content is released. Here we see the waitlist for the Digital Course Academy page.

Amy has more detail than is commonly seen on a waitlist page. Remember that Amy has lots of launch reps and conversion data to work with. If you are starting out recommend keeping it simple.

One feature of the waitlist page that I want to focus on is the Avatar call out.

Every online business owner should have a well developed and accurate Avatar call out.

Most online businesses will have 3-4 specific segments within their target market. These are the people who will gain the most from working with you or which you help most frequently. 

The model Amy uses is simple but effective.

  • If you are a specific person
  • Who has this specific problem
  • And your dream is
  • Then this is for you 

Why not take 5 minutes for the following exercise:

  1. Identify the 3-4 key avatar segments within your business
  2. Idenitfy the biggest pain point for each segment
  3. Identify the common dream for each segment

Your online business is the answer to the question: 

  • How do you help each segment eliminate their biggest pain and make their dreams come true?

High-converting opt-in pages don’t need to be complicated.

This is a simple lead magnet opt-in page from Sean Ferres.

Before we jump in….. 

Have you ever noticed in scary films that you often don’t see the bad guy until way into it?

Well, that’s because our minds will turn an unknown demon into something scarier than any movie producer can create.

It’s important to remember this in marketing, too. 

And Sean does this brilliantly in the copy for this landing page. 

3 Elements We Like:

1 – The visitor is immediately positioned

The opt-in page immediately positions the visitor with “Cash Money Copywriters.” 

If you are a copywriter, you know you are in the right place.

Every opt-in page must let their perfect fit client know they are in the right place.

2 – Doubt and intrigue created

While Clients on Command is a strong opener, it isn’t the knockout punch.

The standout piece of copy is the first bullet point.

“Discover the One Common Piece of Toxic Client-Getting Advice that instantly turns high level biz owners off” – 

This opens a massive loop in the prospect’s head. 

I especially love “Toxic Client Getting Advice”

What if there is one thing I’m doing that turns high-level business owners off?

No matter your niche or lead magnet, you have an equivalent to this in your business.

Use this mechanism as often as you can. It will drive conversions.

  1. Promise to make their lives easy

The 3rd bullet is a beauty.

Copy and paste this script to sign your next high-paying client within a week (even during a recession)

We’re all looking for a shortcut. There is no shortcut better than copy and paste.

Always look to make your perfect-fit client’s life as easy as possible.

But not just that…. take this shortcut and get a result within a week.

When we make timebound promises, they are even more powerful.

And then, to cap it off…. a big objection is handled… (even during a recession).

You can include an objection or major frustration. 

People will come up with all sorts of excuses not to take action.

It’s important you take them off the table by highlighting them.

 

3 Elements We’d Test:

  1. Optimize the header

There is a lost opportunity to increase conversion with the header.

First off, I always like to include FREE. We want to make that clear from the outset.

I also like including something that speaks to the transformation. For example:

  1. Optimize the image

I like iPad, computer, or 3D book images of a lead magnet. They convert well.

This one could do with a little work.

“SEND MESSAGE – GET CLIENT” is great, but the red “2024” breaks the flow, and you have to read it a number of times.

It is also out of line with the other top and bottom titles.

I would split-test this page with an image of Sean holding a print version of the lead magnet.

  1. Optimize the CTA

“Download Now” is a bit mehhh. I like including transformational CTA’s

Grab attention with AI images in your Facebook ads

It’s worth a trip to Sean’s Facebook Ad library.

Dude is testing creative like crazy.

He has gone all-in on AI creative.

Now, I wouldn’t have published all of the options you can see in the library.

I’m all on for quirkiness, but some don’t make sense.

I don’t know what a Tortoise on a toilet or reading a newspaper has to do with copywriting.

Grab attention with AI images in your ads

Sure, it will grab attention, but your image has to be relevant to your audience, the message, and the action you want your audience to take.

In Sean’s case, he only wants to grab the attention of copywriters.

This is why I picked the image of a Jack Russell at an old-school typewriter in the ad for review.

Now, a dog at a typewriter is still a broad blanket.

Sean will probably attract journalists, retired secretaries, and copywriters, but at least there is some positioning.

AI image generators have been slow to help advertisers create images for their ads. 

The top 3 general image generators are:

The main issue is that once they generate an image, it isn’t yet possible to edit it.

And often, if you ask the AI to edit the image, it will discard the bits you like.

There is no doubt that in the coming months and years, AI will output images in layers that we can edit and move around. 

But until then, if you want to leverage AI for your ads, check out this custom tool.

I’ve been massively impressed with this tool.

It’s no replacement for a highly skilled graphic designer, but it helps with high-volume creative testing.

How to grow your email list and FB group at the same time page format

Not quite an offer today but an upsell of sorts.

After opting in for the Lead Magnet, we land on a thank you page.

We stay on this page for a couple of seconds to allow the lead event of the Meta Pixel to fire.

Then we are redirected to the Facebook group.

 

How to grow your email list and FB group at the same time

It’s common to put a button to join your Facebook group on the thank you page of your lead magnet.

But this takes it a step further.

In the follow-up email, the primary call to action is to join the group to get access to the lead magnet.

However, they also include a direct link to download.

Facebook finally opened up the option to run ads directly to your Facebook group but the issue with these ads is you may not get an email address too.

With this strategy, you are getting a 2-for-1 deal.

From a user experience perspective, the second step makes the process feel harder than it needs to be.

This is a strategy I’m probably not going to implement.

Wait, did I just mention the disgusting “C” word. Hell yeah, I did.

And you better get used to hearing about it because 2021’s hot topic is about to resurface.

Anyway, that’s a topic for a different newsletter!

Robert started talking about crypto and, more specifically, Bitcoin in 2020.

That’s important when we come to some social proof on the sales page.

Robert definitely falls into the “expert” who makes money online.

Rather than the slick marketer who sells knowledge online.

As his name precedes him, he doesn’t need all the fills.

This is a super simple opt-in page built in Kartra.

Robert speaks to potential investors’ primary fear, frustration and desire. All in just two words.

 

  • Upside-down opt-in form

Traditionally, the opt-in form is below the body copy.

In this case, Robert keeps the form at the top of the right-hand column.

Looking at the page, the two big selling points are i) Robert Kiyosaki ii) free.

With a strong brand and clear offer, giving people the option to opt-in as quickly as possible is a great idea.

3 Elements To Inspire Your Facebook Ads:

 

  • The power of questions

Questions work on many levels. 

Firstly, they engage the reader. 

We are conditioned to respond to questions. This is one of the great copywriting hacks.

If you match the questions in your audience’s head, they will instantly think you understand them and will feel drawn to you.

They start conversations in your audience’s head and lead them deeper into the rabbit hole.

“How do you begin to profit from them?” 

As a question, this is far more powerful than telling someone they could profit from Bitcoin.

 

  • Stoke the pain, promise the pleasure

Problem, problem, problem…..

But 

“It can be profitable once you understand them”

“It’s not hard once you learn the basics”

“…profit in the new world of crypto.”

Remember, an undisturbed prospect will not take action, no matter how glorious the positive upside is.

 

  • Make digital physical

If you are offering an eBook or digital product, it is always a good idea to depict it as a physical product. This may be in the form of a book or a box.

This makes the intangible tangible and increases the value proposition.

3 or 4 of these pages are high priority. Link to these pages from the header of your sales page.

Make it easy for a prospect to find the information they need.

Always have a header link to jump straight to the pricing block so people who are ready to buy can do so quickly.

Then FAQ’s, pricing, success path, and your bio are all possible sections to link to.

 

  • Social proof

Remember as I said above, Robert only started talking about Crypto in 2020. 

His membership now has 3,500 members paying $87 per month.

$3.65 million a year in 3 years is a spectacular growth rate.

The subtle inclusion of the 3,500 members and 5/5 Star Rating is a great use of non-testimonial social proof.

 

  • Highlight keywords

Use bold and color to highlight keywords and phrases.

No one is ever going to read your entire sales page.

Make it easy for skimmers to understand key messages and points.

Robert does this in the headline with “Biggest Wealth Transfer”

That’s the dream of Crypto. 

Every couple of generations, there is an opportunity to get in on the ground level of something big and for the small guy to win big. (or so, the dream is sold!)

This is the primary promise of the membership.

  • I love how Marie has come up with a way of calculating a dollar amount for the what your bad habits are costing you. If you’re bad habits cost you $20,000 a year and Marie has a course for $2,000 that will stop your bad habits of course you will buy it.
  • Learn how to EARN more by working LESS – Increasing primary promise – decreasing work required to get it. This formula works.

How to Get High-Quality Leads on Facebook

One of the biggest names in the game is winding up for a big launch.

From the 17th to 31 August, Jeff Walker will deliver his hotly anticipated PLF Launch.

This is a genius move. Driving registration for a launch too far in advance is pointless.

However, filling your list with people who are interested in a topic that you are going to focus on during your launch is a win-win.

Jeff gets low-cost, high-quality leads that are aligned with his launch and time to build trust.

The leads get immediate gratification for a top-of-mind problem and will be brought even deeper during the launch.

Let’s dive into the ads:

The allure of A.I. is dominating the headspace of online entrepreneurs all over the world.

When there is a wave in your industry, you best ride it.

The opening hook of the ad works because there is so much awareness and hype around A.I.

“Get my BEST AI prompts, shortcuts, & strategies…

… to launch & scale your business here:”

I like getting a link to the opt-in page early in the ad. 

I have found that ads with medium-length copy outperform short-form ads.

However, there are lots of people who won’t read longer form copy.

Putting your link high in the ad gives you the best of both worlds. 

You get an early CTA but provide additional information to convince people who need that little bit more.

One of the keys to writing engaging copy is making your sentences short.

When I can’t make a sentence less than 1 line, I love using “…” to break the sentence into two parts.

This approach is overused in this ad. The continuous use makes the copy hard to read.

Opt-in Page Masterpiece – From Lead to Launch

The headline is far from the strongest proposition.

“Get the A.I. Edge… In Just One Click”

I don’t know what the A.I. edge is, and while one click tells me it is easy, it’s not either my:

  1. My primary fear/pain/challenge
  2. My #1 goal/dream/ambition

The fact that the topic is A.I. will more than make up for this, and the rest of the copy is sweet.


The subhead is where the magic kicks in. 

I’d love to see a test using the first line as the headline and changing the second line to – Get your proven….

This is an interesting deviation from standard practice. 

If I was reading between the lines, they value the consumption of the lead magnet over inbox placement.

This may be because they plan to retarget opt-ins with ads to register for the upcoming masterclass, but they want to make sure people have consumed the lead magnet in advance.

How to Craft Successful Launch Strategies

The key to a successful launch is having a rabid audience that’s whipped into a frenzy.

 

An audience waiting impatiently for an opportunity to buy something from you.

 

So the question becomes, how do we whip our audience into a buying frenzy?

 

The answer; We show them a future so good it makes their wildest dreams look dull.

 

It might sound easy, but it’s not.

 

The key is painting a future beyond their wildest dreams that they believe they can achieve.

 

Sure, we can make massive promises, but how do we make people believe this time will be different? 

 

How do we show them this time they will get the promised results?

 

We do this by: 

  1. Understanding their current pain points and frustrations and what’s stopping them from moving forward
  2. Being able to speak accurately about their primary goals, dreams, and ambitions. 
  3. Showing them a set of simple steps to take them from where they are to where they want to go.
  4. Proving you have a proven framework to get them to where they want to go.
  5. Proving you are the person they want to lead them to where they want to go.

 

Let’s dive into Stu’s funnel.

 

Most launch funnels start with the promotion of a pre-launch workshop or webinar.

Stu starts well in advance with not just 1 lead magnet but multiple lead magnets.

 

The lead magnets align with the awareness and experience levels of the different avatars who will go onto to purchase his course.

This is aimed at the least aware people. 

 

They like the idea of an online business but have no idea where to start.

 

This is aimed at people who have considered membership and who Stu wants to get excited about the revenue opportunity of launching their membership.

 

This is aimed at people who are ready to launch their membership and want to discover the best way possible to do it.

This is aimed at existing membership site owners who want to scale and grow and existing membership.

These clearly line up with the 4 potential avatars:

  • Can I leave my 9-5 or build an online business?
  • I want to launch an online business, but will I make enough money?
  • I have an idea for a membership, but how do I launch it?
  • How do I scale my membership?

 

If you have a digital offer, you are going to have multiple avatars who will purchase.

 

How are you supporting each of them based on where they are today?

 

How are you showing them that you understand their pain points and their primary frustrations?

 

How are you tailoring your messaging to show them that you understand their primary goals and desires?

But that one underlined sentence is the key to conversion on this page.

It’s specific, it’s odd, it’s unusual, it’s not overhyped (100X), and it’s got me hooked.

Even if it doesn’t help me get 3 times more work done if it even gets me to 1.5X it’s worth it.
